The One Stencil That Works With Every Color – Altenew Strong Oak Layering Stencil Review

Some stencils are beautiful with one colorway and just okay with everything else. The Altenew Strong Oak Layering Stencil Set (6 in 1) is not that stencil. Every single colorway I have tried with it has turned out stunning – and that is not something I say lightly.

I have been reaching for this set over and over, and I honestly think it might be one of my all-time favorites. Let me tell you why.

What Makes the Strong Oak Stencil Special

The Altenew Stencil Art: Strong Oak Layering Stencil Set (6 in 1) creates a realistic oak tree with vibrant foliage, a detailed trunk, and grassy ground detail. The six layers build real depth – it genuinely looks like something you painted rather than stenciled.

What surprises me every time is how versatile it is. Bold, rich purples? Stunning. Warm autumn tones? Equally stunning. Cool winter grays? Also yes. The structure of the design is strong enough to hold up to any palette you throw at it.

The Purple Fantasy Colorway

One of my favorite versions of this card uses the Altenew Enchanted Garden Fresh Dye Inks – a gorgeous collection of deep, jewel-toned purples that feel a little otherworldly and completely captivating. The layered stencil drinks up those rich purple pigments and turns out looking like something from a fairy tale. The Andromeda cardstock coordinates perfectly with this colorway too, giving the whole card a cohesive, elevated feel.

Paired with the right sentiment, this colorway works beautifully for birthday cards, encouragement cards, or any occasion where you want something that really makes an impression. I love finishing with a heat embossed sentiment using the Altenew Pure White Crisp Embossing Powder and my Ranger Heat It Craft Tool – the white pops beautifully against the deep purples and adds that polished, professional finish.

Tips for Getting the Best Results

A few things I have learned from making so many of these cards. First, place your stencil on the Altenew Original Sticky Mat while you ink blend through each layer – it holds everything firmly in place so nothing shifts between passes, which keeps your registration crisp and your layers perfectly aligned. This is honestly the single biggest game changer for layered stenciling. Use multiple shades within your color family – darker tones first, lighter ones on top – to create natural depth that makes the tree really come alive. And do not be afraid of color. This stencil can handle bold and it rewards bravery.
